Early in Jeffrey's career he focused on traditional subject matter like animals, portraits and figure drawing. His interest in art waned as his thirst for the unknown increased. Jeffrey traveled to India in 1997. It was his first taste of freedom. That initial international adventure served to shape his view of himself, his relationship to the world and ultimately his artistic voice.
After five subsequent trips to India as well as trips to other countries including Vietnam, Thailand, Colombia and Peru, Jeffrey experienced a growing desire to share his acquired wisdom. He returned to California and obtained a bachelor's degree in fine arts among the majestic redwoods of Humboldt County. There he worked with ceramic clay and began a disciplined meditation practice. Inspired by the epic erosion process of the Pacific Ocean Jeffrey began fasting and observing. During a five day self-guided meditation fast Jeffrey was inspired to draw with his left hand. He discovered using his left hand allowed him to approach the work from a fresh perspective. He named this perspective "in-know-sense". All the joyful creativity of his childhood was rediscovered, there within him. It had been waiting patiently for expression by a receptive consciousness. This expression of "in-know-sense" is the purpose of Jeffrey's work. It is about self discovery, self inquiry and self acceptance. |
